General Education Center aims to cultivate outstanding naval officers and non-commissioned officers who possess robust physical fitness, balanced mental and physical health, perseverance and martial virtues, moral reasoning, problem-solving skills, effective communication, strong foreign language abilities, and excellent leadership qualities.
1.The curriculum planned by the General Education Center reflects the goals and characteristics of general education. The following principles are adopted in the development of teaching content:
(1) Fundamental Principles (Shaping the character of military academy students): The curriculum includes principles and concepts of ethics.
(2) Integration (Interdisciplinary learning and innovation skills): Development of independent logical thinking abilities.
(3) Subjectivity (Foundational knowledge and humanities literacy): Providing fundamental knowledge and humanities literacy for a well-rounded life.
(4) Integration (Incorporating diverse characteristics from various fields): Meeting the requirements of a diverse cultural curriculum design.
(5) Specialization (Military-related knowledge with naval characteristics): Combining leadership and command, naval traditions and missions, and maritime culture.
(6) Consistency (Integrating static courses and dynamic activities): Combining static courses with dynamic activities.
(7) Service (Serving others and enthusiastic participation in public welfare): Cultivating a spirit of volunteerism and combining the execution of general education passports and school clubs.
2.The curriculum planning and design principles of the General Education Center are as follows:
Apart from the 12-credit courses prescribed by the Ministry of National Defense and the 20-credit courses prescribed by the university (including 6 credits of English and 6 credits of Chinese), totaling 32 credits, the General Education Center plans 2 credits of elective general education courses based on the following five general education principles:
(1) Eternal (Classical content and timeless value): The Art of War, Appreciation of Western literary masters, the wisdom of Laozi, art appreciation, introduction to philosophy, philosophy of life, introduction to social sciences, music appreciation.
(2) Balance (Comprehensive and complete knowledge): History of maritime power, modern Chinese history, Chinese cultural history, introduction to philosophy, introduction to English and American literature, contemporary global social changes and issues.
(3) Progress (Forward-looking and application-oriented): Chinese language, classical poetry appreciation, foreign language, English reading and writing for science and technology, Chinese applied writing, introduction to law, life and law, international etiquette, sports injury prevention practice, emotional management and adaptation.
(4) Diversity (Multiple disciplines and inclusiveness): Introduction to Chinese and Western literature, introduction to art, English for journalism, understanding Taiwan, music appreciation, philosophy of life, sports appreciation, gender and society, culture and society.
(5) Military (Naval characteristics and maritime culture): Military ethics, The Art of War, international maritime law, naval traditions and history, introduction to leadership psychology, human behavior and leadership, maritime literature, physical fitness, introduction to international relations, mainland China studies, maritime English.
3.The principles of appropriate curriculum configuration in general education are as follows:
(1) Foundation: Focus on providing students with essential general knowledge and offer core and liberal arts courses.
(2) Balance: Emphasize a balanced approach to students' knowledge acquisition. Since the university's focus is on science and technology, students are required to take liberal arts and social science courses.
(3) Diversity: Encourage students to acquire broad knowledge by taking interdisciplinary natural science courses and general courses related to military knowledge and recreational sports.
4.The General Education Center has a comprehensive and effective course review mechanism. Each department within the center has a course design committee responsible for the planning and review of general education courses. The course review process includes "Course addition or removal proposed by the department.
